RAM Sustainability retains position in global green-social bonds advisory council
RAM Sustainability has been selected as a member of the 2020/2021 Advisory Council to the Green Bonds Principles (GBP) and Social Bonds Principles (SBP) Executive Committee. This represents its second consecutive year on the advisory council. RAM Sustainability’s admission was formalised on 9 October 2020, after a robust selection process that included 39 other global market participants and stakeholders, shortlisted from an initial 83 international applicants.

The selection is based on a balanced representation of the International Capital Market Association’s (ICMA) GBP and SBP Members and Observers, especially key stakeholders such as exchanges, service providers/rating agencies, external reviewers, law firms and civil society; geographical diversity; and the market shares and activities of green, social and sustainability bond issuers, investors or underwriters not already represented on the Executive Committee. RAM Sustainability is one of only two ASEAN representatives in the council, with the other being the ASEAN Capital Markets Forum.

The GBP and SBP, as well as the Sustainability Bond Guidelines (SBG), have become the leading global framework for the issuance of green, social and sustainability bonds. The ICMA – the industry body for the cross-border bond market – oversees the principles on behalf of more than 300 international issuers and investors, regulators, environmental non-governmental organisations, rating agencies and other market participants.

“We are humbled by the opportunity to serve another term on the advisory council,” says Promod Dass, CEO of RAM Sustainability. “RAM Sustainability aims to contribute valuable perspectives as an ASEAN pioneer of green-social finance services,” he adds.

RAM Sustainability, a provider of sustainability services and ESG analytics, is a wholly owned subsidiary of RAM Holdings Berhad (the RAM Group). RAM Sustainability is the first ASEAN-based provider of sustainability ratings and second opinions, and has the distinction of being the first ASEAN Registered Observer to ICMA’s GBP, SBP and SBG. On 12 August 2020, RAM Sustainability also became an Approved Verifier for the certification of climate bonds under the Climate Bonds Standard & Certification Scheme after having been awarded the status by the Climate Bonds Standards Board.

As part of market capacity building and development, RAM Sustainability collaborated with Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) to translate the ICMA’s GBP, SBP and SBG in 2018. This year, we have again worked together with the SC to translate the ICMA’s latest Sustainability-Linked Bond Principles from English to Bahasa Malaysia. This is now available on the ICMA’s website. Our other recent projects include assigning environmental and social benefit ratings to eligible projects under national mortgage corporation Cagamas Berhad’s proposed ASEAN Sustainability Bonds/SRI Sukuk.

The RAM Group is an active contributor to the development of sustainability and global green finance. On 26 May 2016, RAM Ratings joined the global line-up of six pioneer credit rating agency signatories to the PRI’s Statement on ESG in Credit Ratings.
